President's Message |
|
| The Day of our Spring Salad Luncheon is fast approaching. Jean Yeager is our ticket chairperson again this year and now has tickets available. The luncheon is on Saturday again so we look forward to welcoming our working members once more. Also be sure to invite friends and family members. Those attending our April General Meeting will have another chance to sign up to help with the luncheon. At this time we still need someone to hold the drawing for door prizes; greeters; and help with set-up, clean-up, and setting out salads. I have volunteered to be in charge of the Boutique but would welcome some help: setting up, selling and putting away. We also need lots more women to sign up to bring salads.
Remember our two other events this month: The Atlantic Street Center Dinner on the evening of April 8. The Quilt Group will help with hanging quilts as usual. Then the next day, April 9, is our District spiritual retreat Day Apart at Auburn UM Church. A number of us have signed up to attend but we would welcome other women who are interested. You’ll enjoy hearing our keynote speaker Joyce O’Connor McGee, some great fellowship and a nice luncheon. See Jean Hutchison for more information.
Our Cooperative School of Christian Mission is coming again this summer. This event is co-sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference and by PNW Conference of United Methodist Women. Both men and women participate and are welcome.

"Mission Today" -
Goals for Our Unit |
|
| Last month we listed a number of goals that the Woodland Park unit of United Methodist Women had taken on for the year. First among these was the goal to attract younger women into our activities and membership. Ways of giving to mission which make a “Seven Star” unit are another goal. (cont. on back) This month we want to present our “Mission Today” goals. “Mission Today” is a national program “to enliven the membership of United Methodist Women to be educated about and involved in mission today.”
The Pacific Northwest Conference of UMW expanded the original list of “Mission Today” goals to 24 items. To become a “Mission Today” unit, a unit must complete at least 18 of these goals to become a Gold Star unit or at least 16 to become a Silver Star unit. These goals are listed below (starred goals are required):
- Use the Prayer Calendar in meetings at least four times a year to pray for persons in mission work with women, children, and youth.
- At least one member of the unit will attend the Conference Cooperative School of Christian Mission and the district Mini-School of Mission.
- At least two members will attend the district or conference annual meeting.
- The unit will use two programs from the Program Book during the year.
- The unit will have at least one person attend the legislative event held each year in February.
- Members shall write to a minimum of three persons listed in the Prayer Calendar at least once a year.
- At least two members will attend the Local Leadership Training Event.
- The unit will conduct at least one mission study a year.
- The unit will implement the Charter for Racial Justice in at least one way during the year.
- The unit will promote and/or co-sponsor with the local church a Children’s Sabbath and a Church for All God’s Children (The Bishop’s Initiative).
- The unit will meet its pledge to mission.
- The unit will be a five star unit contributing to all five channels of undesignated giving plus supporting the Mission Candles and Love Ribbons.
- The unit will contribute quilts to at-risk infants and children, kits to UMCOR, and contribute to other local projects.
- The unit will have two or more members volunteer at a food bank, feeding program, women’s shelter or agency that works with children.
- The unit will have one or more members participate in a VIM project.
- The unit will promote and offer scholarships to the Conference Cooperative School of Christian Mission.
- Each unit will include a Response moment at least four times a year where an item from Response maga zine will be lifted up as a way to tell a mission story.
- The unit will have at least two members subscribing to Response Magazine.
- The unit will increase by at least two person.
- The unit will have at least one member serve on a UM related board or agency where available.
- The unit will participate in “The Call to Prayer and Self Denial” offering.
- The unit will have at least one member participate in the Reading Program.
- The unit will have at least one person join the Women’s Action Network and respond to legislative information at least three times a year.
